Abstract:

The presentation draws on the recent International Labour Organisation [ILO] report  by Duncan Chappell and Vittorio Di Martino entitled "Violence at Work". The talk is intended to provide a basis for understanding the nature of workplace violence including: the changing profile of violence at work;  occupations and situations most at risk and;  the social and economic costs to individuals, business and the community. The paper suggest ways of preventing  workplace violence and highlights best practice and successful methods of prevention.

The talk will be helpful to those engaged in combating violence at work; policy makers, employers' and worker organisations; health and safety professionals;  training personnel and management and workers' representatives.

The speaker : Duncan Chappell is a former Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology and has held senior academic posts in Australia, Canada and the United States. He has been consultant to government and international bodies including the Commonwealth and United Nations.
